Michael John Gorman has also a lot of fun playing with Terraria!

"Terraria really takes the simplest idea of children's play -- playing with toys, and adding voices, turning toys into characters, and allows children to capture the play on video, and turns movie-making into a natural extension of play. For me that is what is great about it -- filming emerges from play, enhances play, and allows play to be recorded, shared, viewed, tweaked."

Terraria has been given to children aged 10-14 to experiment with. Pilots informed us of the need to rethink the interface between capturing and editing, as well as to simplify the commands of the movie. During pilot studies, we found that the users would want to use a device they were familiar with, such as a joystick, to interact in a playful and effective way while creating their visual stories.

Our system Terraria captures movie segments, voice over, and offers real-time video and sound effects. The user records sounds and visuals, and applies real time effects using a joystick. Consequently, a novel movie gets created and generated in a very transparent, and easy manner. The simplicity of use, and immediacy of response aims to engage visitors in movie creation. Video capture, editing and publication of the final video is optimized. To another extent, the system can easi...

posted by: Cati Vaucelle.

Our work is inspired by previous research that facilitates the transition between video editing and capturing for 10-14 year olds [Vaucelle et al. 2005] and it extends the concept to the making of movies within the context of an exhibition. While usual editing tools such as iMovie™ facilitate the editing process, they require a longer time frame of interaction than the one offered in an exhibition space and are mainly suitable for home use; on the other hand, digital jockey...

posted by: Cati Vaucelle.

Introduction

‘Science and technology’ museums of the last half century afford visitors an entirely new experience while maintaining their learning function [Bell 2002]. Within the context of a three-month exhibition on the history of robots at The Ark: a Cultural Center for Children, in Dublin, Ireland, we have created a system for visitors to author the content of the exhibition space by creating their own movies and telling visual stories using robots. The challenge of making a finished...

posted by: Cati Vaucelle.
